Dr David Brown has worked in collaboration with a long-term client to produce a range of catalysts for screening at Drochaid. This has involved close discussion with the client along with literature review to define the desired catalyst properties. A range of materials were synthesised using a variety of techniques to produce both supported metal catalysts and precipitated metal oxides. These techniques include incipient wetness, slurry and melt impregnation. Precipitated materials were produced with Drochaid’s Labmax system along with specifically designed systems when required. The preparations were carried out to investigate the influence of production methods; nature of support; and promoter elements on the catalytic transformation under investigation. These materials can also be created with calcination of the precursors under a number of different gas atmospheres including air/hydrogen/inert/NO/syngas with the aim of producing more effective catalysts for testing. With the testing of these materials also carried out at Drochaid a rapid and thorough discussion with the client to assess how preparation conditions influenced catalytic properties could take place to devise a second round of preparations with improvements devised from the initial screening. This holistic approach involving close cooperation with the client and within sections at Drochaid drives development of the best possible catalyst system and also operating conditions for the client.
